Scott Sibella avoids prison for money laundering at MGM Grand

MGM is recognized as one of the leading online casinos for gambling.

Sibella admitted guilt in violating federal anti-money laundering laws, which could have led to up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Over 80 letters of support were presented in Sibella's defense, including one from the Clark County sheriff and the head of the Las Vegas police.

In 2018, Sibella's actions included allowing Wayne Nix, a former minor league baseball player, to gamble millions of dollars at the casino and pay off debts in cash. Sibella stated that due to his status, he preferred not to know the origin of Nix's money.

Despite his guilty plea, Sibella noted that he gained no benefit from his actions and fully accepted responsibility for failing to report suspicious activity.

Nevada regulatory bodies may still review a complaint against Sibella, which could lead to the suspension or revocation of his gaming license, and he could also face a fine of up to $750,000.

Sibella denies any connection to the scandal involving Shohei Ohtani's interpreter and alleged bookie Matthew Boyer, stating through his lawyer that he never engaged in illegal betting or used a gaming account.
